IUSM Faculty Research Funding Opportunities

IU and IUSM offer several internal funding programs to support faculty research. Proposals are peer reviewed and subject to established deadlines and submission criteria.

Biomedical Research Grant from the IUSM Biomedical Research Committee (BRC)

All full-time faculty, regardless of tenure status, having an appointment of Assistant Professor or Assistant Scientist and above, who have less than $100,000 in extramural funding at the time of application, are eligible. In general, two categories of research projects will benefit from this program: 1) research projects of investigators new to IUSM who do not yet have extramural funding and who need support to acquire the preliminary data necessary to compete for extramural funding; 2) research projects of established IUSM investigators who are between funding periods from extramural sources.
Deadlines = first regular business day in January, May and September

Clarian Health Values Fund from the Clarian Hospitals

Applicants must be employees of Clarian Health or physicians and health professionals with staff privileges at Clarian Health. Funding is available in three areas: Research, Education, and Spirituality. The Research category is primarily directed at new and young investigators or those investigators embarking on a new career direction.
Deadline Medical Research & Medical Education = TBA
Deadline Religious & Spiritual Dimension = TBA

Collaborations in Biomedical Research from the IUSM and Purdue University

A pilot program to promote biomedical research collaboration has been formed by the Indiana University School of Medicine and Purdue University. The program will provide funding for up to three projects, at a level of $50,000 each, to enable researchers from the two universities to team up on work that is likely to spawn larger ongoing programs and attract outside funding.
Deadline = TBA

Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Cancer Center Translational Research Acceleration Collaboration (ITRAC)

The Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Cancer Center Translational Research Acceleration Collaboration (ITRAC) is open to all members/affiliates of the IU Simon Cancer Center and is designed to assist investigators to better position their projects for internal / external grant submission status (eg R21, R01, etc.)  All proposals much be mapped prior to internal submission but ITRAC's resources are made available to members/affiliates at all levels of project design.  If you are a member/affiliate of the IU Simon Cancer Center, please visit the ITRAC Group Site for further details about processes and services. Questions? Contact ITRAC Project Managers Crystal Banks or Mary Murray.

IUSM Core Funding Requests

IUSM Core Funding Requests: Requests for equipment or bridge funding from approved IUSM Cores are considered two times per year (see link to Core funds application above).  The Committee has an allotment of $100,000 to distribute each fiscal year.  Individual funding requests cannot exceed $75,000 without prior approval from the Core Oversight Committee.  In order to be designated as an IU School of Medicine (IUSM) Core, a Core must submit an application for review by the Core Oversight Committee

Pilot Funding for Research Use of Core Facilities at the IUSM (BRC)

All full-time faculty, regardless of tenure status, having a primary appointment in the School of Medicine at a rank of Assistant Professor or Assistant Scientist and above, regardless of extramural funding levels, are eligible. This program has been created to provide pilot funding to encourage researchers to utilize IUSM core facilities (e.g. generation of transgenic or knockout mice, imaging, microarrays, etc) to generate preliminary data for competitive extramural grant applications.
Deadline = TBA

Research Enhancement Program at the IUSM (BRC)

The Research Enhancement Program is designed to stimulate research productivity at the statewide Centers for Medical Education including the Bloomington Medical Sciences Program. Center/Bloomington Medical Sciences faculty who commit 80% or more of their time to medical school activities, irrespective of their university appointment, are eligible to apply as project directors.
Deadline = First regular business day in May

IUPUI Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research

The IUPUI Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research sponsors several internal funding mechanisms designed to enhance the research mission of IUPUI by supporting research projects and scholarly activities that are sustainable through external funding.  The vice chancellor's research page also features links to other internal funding mechanisms on campus.

Showalter Research Trust Funding at the IUSM

Open to current Indianapolis full-time faculty, on a non-visiting status, having a rank of Assistant Professor or Assistant Scientist. Areas of appropriate biomedical research eligible for funding are broad and described by the benefactors as “the type of medical research that is most likely to permanently benefit mankind.
