Indiana University's Draft Web Policy Statement
as adopted by the IU School of Medicine
The privacy of individuals visiting the Indiana University Web environment is of the utmost importance to the University.
Collection of Personal Information
Indiana University Web pages do not collect any individually identifiable information about a visitor that the visitor does not expressly provide. Any information that a visitor does expressly provide is used only for purposes related to the function or activity that the Web page supports. Those purposes will be explicitly stated on the Web page.
Many web sites at the IU School of Medicine web site use Google Analytics, a Web analytics service provided by Google, Inc. ("Google"). Google Analytics uses "cookies", which are text files placed on your computer, to help the Web site analyze how users use the site. The information generated by the cookie about your use of the Web site (including your IP address) will be transmitted to and stored by Google on servers in the United States. Google will use this information for the purpose of evaluating your use of the Web site, compiling reports on Web site activity for Web site operators and providing other services relating to Web site activity and Internet usage. Google may also transfer this information to third parties where required to do so by law, or where such third parties process the information on Google's behalf. Google will not associate your IP address with any other data held by Google. You may refuse the use of cookies by selecting the appropriate settings on your browser. By using this website, you consent to the processing of data about you by Google in the manner and for the purposes set out above. Google provides more privacy information at its privacy center.
If a visitor of an Indiana University web page provides information and then wishes to subsequently have that information removed/deleted, they should contact the Webmaster for that particular page, which should be clearly identified somewhere on that page. Should this occur, services or requests for which the visitor provided information may subsequently be revoked or denied by the University.
External Distribution of Information
Indiana University does not sell or otherwise provide any information collected on a University Web page to any external entity except as expressly stated on the Web page, or as otherwise required by law.
Collection of Technical Information
Technical connection information such as the Internet Protocol (IP) network address and/or the caller identification information of persons visiting University Web pages is collected and stored for a period of time on University computers, normally for 30 days. This information is used in aggregate form by the University department or the computing center maintaining the Web page or the host computer, for the purpose of session troubleshooting and capacity planning, and to improve the services and processes supported by their Web pages. This information may be shared with University personnel and/or law enforcement or investigative authorities to assist the investigation of and response to suspected violations of law and University policy, in accordance with the principles and procedures outlined in information technology policies at http://informationpolicy.iu.edu.
Security
While no computing environment can be 100% secure, it is Indiana University's goal to maintain as secure a technical environment as is feasible given the current state of capabilities and technologies. University agencies creating or maintaining Web pages are expected to maintain their pages and supporting systems and databases at a security level consistent with prevailing industry standards regarding the type of activity and data collection and processing occurring on the Web pages.
Indiana University will comply with all State and Federal statutes requiring additional safeguards for certain types of information, such as student personal information or patient health information.
