In anticipation of our 45th class reunion, an ad-hoc committee began discussing how best to celebrate the time we spent together at the Indiana University School of Medicine and the opportunities our education afforded us.
We began in 1959 as divergent classmates with little commonality and ended in 1963 as friends, colleagues and professionals. We felt our class should commemorate these achievements and promote their continuation in future graduates. This could be achieved by establishing an endowed Class of 1963 Scholarship.
Subsequent to this meeting, John Quakenbush passed away. We remember John for his optimism and zeal for life. He looked on the positive side of life and always offered reassuring words to classmates. His commentary at our 40th reunion was very memorable and entertaining. He was a true friend and we will miss him.
For these reasons, we have decided to promote the formation of a Class of 1963 John P. Quakenbush Scholarship. An account has been established, and several of us have already made gifts and pledges. Our goal is to fully endow the scholarship at the $100,000 level by our 50th reunion. Knowing the giving nature of our class, we will exceed that mark!
The need for this scholarship is more critical than ever. Students are graduating from the School of Medicine with financial burdens we never imagined. Members of the Class of 2007 borrowed an average of nearly $150,000 to finance their medical education. Interest will increase their final payback to a daunting $185,400!
A gift or pledge at this time of $5,000 or more over a five-year period will be acknowledged at our reunion dinner.
We look forward to celebrating the time we spent together and the friendships we forged in medical school at the upcoming reunion, which is scheduled for May 16-17. It will be great to see you again! Make sure to send in your registration now.
Best regards,
Robert W. Holden, M.D.
Merrill A. Ritter, M.D.
John E. Pless, M.D.
William B. Moores, M.D.
